It is finally Friday and I miss the sun. When will spring finally get here for us folk on the lake? I have been trucking along on the treadmill and today I feel fantastic…surprisingly. I hate the dreadmill but girl gotta work in the 40 miles somehow…

So today is confession Friday. I am at mile 18 of running and I am not sure I will make it to 40. I have my baby girl all weekend and that is a lot of time to be away from her. We will see. I also have to drive her away when I am on the treadmill because she wants to run too…That is all I need. I don’t want my three year old flying off the treadmill into the wall. Talk about a serious heart attack!

So I have a big confession. I have been trying to build confidence so there is this contest. “Win a date with a local celebrity.” Well I tried out for it and I won! I am giving up my solo run Tuesday for a date with a bachelor. Call me crazy, but I am completely excited. He gets to have five dates in five nights and the radio listeners get to pick the girl they find most compatible.

I am a bit nervous so if you have any words of advice please let me know! I will be myself and I have no idea what to wear. There will be a guy there to “chaperone” our date and I just hope the bachelor doesn’t run out the door. Here is the letter I wrote to him…

Dear Ted and Amy,

My name is Beth Squire and I am a 33 year old school teacher in the Syracuse City School District. I have lived in upstate NY my entire life and my parents live in northern Maine. I teach first grade English As a Second Language and have loved working with children for more than ten years. I enjoy traveling and have been to more than thirteen countries through volunteer work and vacation. I studied French for fourteen years, but I speak Spanish, German and a little Italian. Outside of work I enjoy running and road biking. I have been in over 30 half marathons and 2 full marathons. I started running to stay in shape and help out charities, but I was hooked on racing and haven’t stopped since. I enjoy fishing and hiking and have visited some of the high peaks. I used to go camping every summer growing up to Cranberry Lake and was a camp counselor for two summers. I love making fires and toasting grilled cheese in the woods! I would love
to hike the Appalachian Trail, but I do not have enough free time to do the entire trail.

I recently started blogging about running and traveling because I have always wanted to be a writer. I like to read books but I read too fast and hate the endings. Someday, I hope to write my own book but I never have enough time. I confess I have been divorced for over a year, but I have the most amazing three year old named Lilly. She is a true inspiration for me and I hope that I am a positive role model for her and my students. Besides writing a book, I hope to run in the Boston Marathon and I always joke that if I don’t qualify, I will hopefully be able to run it in the 70-75 age category. I also want to run a marathon on every continent.

It is hard for me to come up with dislikes. I often laugh because my family lives in Maine and I do not eat a lot of seafood. I was really sick from it and shellfish doesn’t seem to like me. However, I always said my last meal would be shrimp because I love it and I can’t eat it. I love Mexican food, but am up for any cultural dish. I could never be a vegetarian and maple sugar candy is my weakness. I love animals and recently adopted two cats. I named them Sunni and Penelope, but Lilly insists they are Rocky and Scaly, I love the outdoors so much I avoid the gym at all cost. I spend so much time at work inside that I get outdoors whenever I can. I am pretty sure I even have frost bite because I went running when the wind-chill was below zero.

My parents met on a blind date, were engaged after two weeks, and have been married for 36 years. I am hoping to meet someone who can be real. I want someone who is down to earth and up for an occasional adventure. My goal in life is to find someone who can love me for who I am and I want to fall in love with my best friend!

Who Has Guts?

     Have you got what it takes?  Do you have the will, the time, the dedication to run 26.2 miles?

Well, my goal has been to do 40 miles of running a week.  I have been doing great, but a marathon is not a joke.  Anyone can go out and run a mile.  Some people can go out and run a 5k.  Then, you gradually work your way up to the longer distances.  I have done 32 half marathons, but I have only done 2 full marathons.  Why have I done only two full marathons?  Here is why:

  I will never forget my first marathon in 2012.  It was April and I was in Gettysburg.  I had heard many good things about the full marathon and I had recently completed the Gettysburg half marathon in October.  That was fun!  There was an hour delay for the race and there was ice and snow everywhere….in Pennsylvania.  I finished in 1:45…and won a nice apple pie.  I couldn’t go wrong with the full marathon….ha ha ha !!!!!!

“If you feel bad at 10 miles, you’re in trouble. If you feel bad at 20 miles, you’re normal. If you don’t feel bad at 26 miles, you’re abnormal.”

It was so hot out that day.  I reached mile 20 and felt great…then it hit me…heat stroke.  I hate to get a little gross, but I was throwing up everywhere.  No one had ever told me what to do when you get all the way to mile 20 and you are vomiting.  I didn’t know what to do but I wanted to finish the race.  I walked for the rest of the race and finished in a whopping 4:50…I was disappointed.  I never wanted to run again.  However, I would not let myself give up.  I made myself go back and run the same course the following year to get over it.  My time was 4:20…not the greatest, but a lot better than before.  Being from New York State, I was not happy with the heat.  Image

 

  If you are a runner, I dare you to run a marathon!  You need to have the right state of mind, but no matter how much I remember being in pain from finishing, at least I ran.  There is nothing better than saying you just ran 26.2 miles. 

 

    I am on my way and hopefully some day I will qualify for Boston.  Just remember to eat right, have fun, and be smart.  Do not under train and do not over train!  Trust me, it doesn’t work if you do not do it right.  This week I am at 16 miles, but I feel great and I am not overdoing it!

Tales of the Dreadymill…

It has been extremely cold this week…I started off this week well and I was already up to 14 miles by today when I was faced with the obstacle of the dreadmill…a long run…gulp…okay I can do this.

I went to the gym at my apartment building and ran inside with shorts on and I was all pumped up. The guy in the gym looked at me like I am crazy. I said I needed to run and I am so used to being outside that I was not looking forward to the treadmill.

Perhaps if I could go biking on a treadmill I would feel more enjoyment. I love to run but yuck! I don’t know what moment in life comes about that makes someone say, “yippie! I love treadmills.” I hate treadmills!

Lilly is almost four and she still loves the jogger. We have a BOB jogger. She loves the shocks on it and sometimes falls asleep on the long runs. Well I ended up running three miles but I am looking forward to daylight savings and the warm temperatures….where is that stupid groundhog when you need him? I am about ready to bribe him for a change in weather.

Welcome Back to Siberia

I never thought I would say this but it feels good to be cold! After a long vacation and massive amounts of sun, the cold feels like a nice ice pack to put on a stove burn. It sure feels good and I am looking forward to not dying of heat stroke when I run.

I almost ran over this poor dog when I went onto the beach because the sun wasn’t up and he needed a bath. I told him I was sorry and he let me pass. I think he was the “beach keeper.” He was the cutest little thing but I didn’t know how sanitary he was after living on the beach. I think he was waiting for the tourists to feed him his daily breakfast and alcohol. I am sure he was well fed.

So what was my mileage during vacation? Glad you asked…I just counted up my vacation miles and I am proud to say I ran 31.3 miles. I also made myself go into the ocean and get over my fear of rabid sharks and sea monsters. It didn’t work, but it was worth a shot. My record is now 20 minutes of being in the water, but I confess I was standing there for most of it.

Lilly is ready to get her beach on, but I am sorry to have to tell her I do not think it is a good time to swim on the beach in Maine. We are going to hopefully be visiting my family in Maine in February and it will not be hot! She will survive, but the temperatures have been less than wonderful here these days. My flight was canceled and we rented a mini cooper to get back to Syracuse from Newark because the flight was canceled until Thursday. After going through a slip and slide I proudly thank the creators of Starbucks for making it possible to drive through the demolition derby to get back home. I think I hit the pillow at three in the morning, but was able to get about four hours of sleep…we had a windchill day. I would like another one tomorrow…pretty please? snow

I made myself get up today and make up for the miles I missed out on last week. I feel great today and I am sad we are going home tomorrow but I miss Lilly and can’t wait to see her. I owe her a carousel ride because it was closed when we were at the mall and I wanted to take her for a second turn. image

How can you not miss this little cutie ? I can’t wait to love her up. My friend jess is in the one picture. Her hair is shorter! I give her credit! I have been getting up to run here every day and it sucks the life out of me!!!

I am not sure what I will do today but I am making myself go in the water for a while because I need to tell my hydrophobia to suck it!
I’m proud of the miles I have logged here… Hmmm I have managed more than 20…I will freeze at home but I don’t mind….image

Buenos Dias amigos! Que tal?

Greetings from Puerto Plato….The Dominican Republic…..

It is a bit of a weather adjustment since it was about -28 in Syracuse a few weeks ago and now I am trying to run in 88 degree weather….I already know I will not make 40 miles this week but I am proud I got up at 6am (7here) and went for a 6.2 mile run….and wanted to die about a half a mile into it because I was wearing a black tank top and had no water. I can’t carry a water bottle and I wear the tank top and put my hair up to attract less attention from the locals…however, my hair is blonde and I think there are just too many people to blend in. I had a couple of encounters with runners today, which was nice. Yesterday I ran around 11 and was really hot….but I think today was hotter. It is supposed to reach 90 today.

I need some good sunscreen recommendations because my sunscreen stings my eyes when I run and it doesn’t work….here is exhibit b:

I ran about ten miles Friday after running about ten at the beginning of the week so I suspect Ill be about nine miles short of my goal but I am really burnt and anti the heat stroke concept….so I am not unhappy….I will run 40 this week and even run early tomorrow and Tuesday…no worries.

I also managed to get into the water here. I hate the ocean and I think being eaten by a shark is on my top ten list of ways I don’t wanna bite the dust.
There is no one watching the beach so I don’t want to swim unsupervised….

I have been reading The Hunger Games. I am almost finished. I definitely inherited the reading curse from the family because I read very fast so I may need to get another book …

I want to post more photos but I am dying in the heat and this is the Internet place so Ill save it for the next post.

I am having a great time with Julie. I feel like an old lady because I fell asleep at ten last night…from too much sun and running. I am glad I am not drinking too much and having a relaxing time. I think somewhere along the way, I have forgotten how to do that…

Image  I took two days off of running and all I want to do is go home and take a nap because it has been a long day…the kids were so hyper today I think the sugar truck broke down in front of our school.

 

I ran 5 miles on Monday but was side-lined due to an interestingly swollen toe…and my body wanted a break.  I obviously have 35 more miles to run this week and my motivation is the fact that I have been eating a lot of cookies and I am stressed out.

I am hoping to run 10 miles today but it is getting dark out and I don’t want to be hit by a car.  I have also been thinking about going back to the Syracuse Chargers Track Club.  It meets on Sundays from 6-8.  ImageRun For Dennis 2012

I am glad I will be rejoining the group because I like my Charger jersey and I feel stupid wearing it to races when I am not a member.  I think the running group made me stronger and I actually did the workouts they gave me.  Now, I get lazy and occasionally do the workouts.  I think I do them about once a month ha ha ha. 

 

Okay so I am about to leave work and go get some errands done.  I am hoping for ten so we will see if I make it physically or mentally.  Wish me luck…and is it Friday yet?
